The Evidence Board

Six months of the people who made it explaining it. We pinned what their words and the evidence say before a single reaction landed, and on October 21 this board gets graded in public, pin by pin.

House rules

Nothing lands on this board that we have not already said on camera, with a date on it. Every claim names the outlet it came from. Scoops and leaks do not count until a real outlet verifies them. And when we get one wrong, we stamp it, strike it, and leave it up.

The Picture SaysWhat we think is happening, and why

01

The Penguin earned Clayface the right to exist without Batman. It did not earn Matt Hagen your investment.

Eight episodes in a Gotham with Batman off the street, and the absence had a job: nobody is coming, so Oz can rise. A villain's story works without the hero when the hero's absence is a condition of the story instead of a hole in it.

02

A story set before the famous thing has one temptation: pay off with the famous thing.

Gotham promised a world not there yet and ended with Bruce Wayne in the cowl. Joker proved a Gotham story could end, and then the sequel did not let it. Two failures, two directions, same temptation.

03

They are adapting the cartoon, and the cartoon ends with a man in a vat.

The comics Matt Hagen is a treasure hunter who falls into a pool (Detective Comics #298, Dec 1961). The movie Hagen is an actor whose face gets wrecked and a treatment that lets him wear other faces. That is Feat of Clay, 1992, the version Mike Flanagan named when he first pitched it.

Everything they bought says one movie that ends.

A reported forty million dollars, stripped down and R rated. A director of ordinary people cornered. A lead who is nobody's movie star yet, playing a man who was almost famous. None of it is how you build a brick in a wall.

05

Forty million dollars says let it end. "Very connected" says don't. The last reel picks.

Gunn calls it "totally DCU" and "very connected." So far the connections are set dressing, and the director told SFX you feel "the shadow of the Bat inherently" just by being in Gotham. Reeves calls it "also a revenge story." Revenge stories end.

Watch ForIf these land, the picture sharpens

A Roland Daggett, by that name or any other.

The cartoon needs the man who holds the cream. Someone has to own the supply.

A clock on the treatment.

Something Hagen has to come back for. In the cartoon, needing more was the side effect. Here it should be the whole second act.

Corr believing it before it works.

The founder, not the mad scientist. She gets a desperate man to say yes because she already said yes to herself.

Hagen wearing a face we have already seen.

The final trailer promised it with Eddie Marsan's face sliding off.

An ending that closes.

A man in a vat, or the movie's version of one, and then the credits.

This Breaks ItIf these land, we were wrong, and we say so here

Batman shows up.

Any Batman, any frame.

Clayface gets a hero beat.

The moment you are supposed to cheer the monster.

The treatment is a one-time cure.

No cost, no clock, no coming back. Then the addiction is gone, and so is the only reason the cartoon worked.

The last two minutes point at the famous thing.

A tag. A file. A rooftop. Anything that tells you the next movie matters more than this one.

The Room, As Hired

We are not grading the casting. Every person here gets the same three questions: what are they known for, what does that buy, and what does it mean for the story.

James Watkins

James Watkins

Director

Known for: Eden Lake, Speak No Evil

Movies where ordinary people get cornered and the camera does not flinch. You hire that for a monster movie when the monster is the last thing you want the audience looking at.

Matt Hagen / Clayface

Known for: White Lines, Suspicion

Handsome, Welsh, nobody's movie star yet. The character is a man who was almost famous and lost his face before he got there. They cast the role's own biography.

Naomi Ackie

Dr. Caitlin Corr

Known for: I Wanna Dance with Somebody, Mickey 17, Blink Twice

The Holmes comparison says founder, not mad scientist. Ackie plays conviction. You hire that to make the audience want the treatment to work.

Max Minghella The actor
? Gotham police detective In the comics

Max Minghella

Gotham police detective

Known for: The Handmaid's Tale, The Social Network

Dating Caitlin Corr. In most versions the other man is the obstacle. Here the other man is the badge, and the monster can wear his face.

The Receipt Wall

The Nation's best calls, on the record. Want to be up here? Say it in the comments, that is where we pull them from.

Highlighted call

We are getting a fake Hagen death and him leaving leaving as another main character. End credits show Hagen has been pretending to be a main character already established in the DCU. I am going with lex luthor in jail.

I think the movie is already broken. It can't end because we already know that clayface is in creature commandos and he is a villain. He is a killer. Clay face broke Rick flag senior's back so we know that despite this origin story Cafe sticks around and is a villain. So to that right? If Batman does not show up in the movie and if he is not even mentioned then that's a fail. Also given that we are already introduced to what clayface becomes in creature commandos we need some sort of story in this movie as it's his origin to make us care about the villain that we already know he becomes and that's where I think they're totally going to miss the mark, especially without a Batman because it seems seems as though clay face is on the run in creature commandos so what is he running from other than Batman?
