We fell in love with this show. We’ve probably watched Episode 1 of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, I don’t know, a dozen times since last week. And I’m not here alone on this one. I’m here with Mrs. Know-It-All, and she’s giving her two cents, because she didn’t get to tell you about Episode 1 from her perspective.

Jennifer Walters is doing her thing again, and I liked the episode. Mrs. Know-It-All did too. The show’s doing really good stuff, and I think it’s giving us a breath of fresh air.

Mrs. Know-It-All on Episode 1

The only thing she could really find that she had a problem with was the hair. When she’s She-Hulk she has straight hair, and as Jen she’s got curly hair. Super girly, I know. Overall she gave Episode 1 a 7 out of 10, and she heard I gave it a little higher than she did. Slightly. But she loves it. She’s into it.

Fired at the Bar

This week’s episode is called “Superhuman Law,” and it picks up literally on the heels of last week, with Jen Walters getting fired at the bar by her boss, because apparently it’s all too high profile. They ultimately get a mistrial, because the other side manipulates the whole thing.

So she goes looking for a job, and you get this montage of her sitting at desk after desk after desk after desk. The environment changes, everything shifts, and she’s consistently not being hired. I don’t want to say bigotry, because I feel like that’s too big of a word, but that might be what it is. All the lawyers seem to be afraid she’d be more of a liability than a help. A couple of them come across like they feel she would be a sideshow, like somehow superheroes aren’t serious enough for the law to take them seriously. Which I take umbrage with.

A Lot of Familiar Faces Around the Table

On the heels of getting fired, you get to see Tatiana Maslany’s Jennifer Walters go home and see her family, and I enjoyed a lot of familiar faces around that table. Sarah Halley Finn is doing such an amazing job casting everybody in all the MCU stuff.

We also get to meet Ched. If you remember from last week, Bruce and Jen were talking in the car about how he’s not the only genius in the family, and Ched apparently is one too.

I like the direction the show went in this week.

The Superhero Law Division

Once she’s had dinner with her family, she’s back at the bar, and she’s discount drinking now. She can no longer pay for what she calls her six figure student loans for going to law school.

That’s where she gets visited by Mr. Holliway. He was on the opposing side last week, in the case she lost, and he’s the one who actually made it end up a mistrial, because it turned into a show trial. Literally the thing she’s trying to fight. He’s starting a superhero law division, and he wants her in it.

I liked that we got to see Josh Segarra’s character this week, along with several of the people who are eventually going to become that superhero law group. And of course she’s told she has to be in She-Hulk form to be a lawyer. I felt really bad for her.

She brings her paralegal with her, Nikki, played by Ginger Gonzaga. I love whatever they’re doing with that character. She’s a lot of fun.

Emil Blonsky Is Very Namaste Now

Then we get the Abomination again. Well, we saw Tim Roth. We didn’t see the Abomination, and that was kind of cool.

This is the scene we’ve seen in some of the promos, where she says it’s a conflict of interest and finds out he’s signed a conflict of interest waiver. They meet for the first time, and he sells her on the fact that he’s ready to go. He’s all healed. He’s all natural. He’s all very, like, namaste.

Mrs. Know-It-All put her finger on the moment it turns. When Jen was talking to Emil Blonsky, the spark for why she should take the case was that it was government funded. It was a government experiment. That’s when she realizes, yeah, I’m totally taking this. And come to find out, the dude wrote Bruce an apology letter and a haiku. We put all that behind us. Very cool.

I don’t know why you’re watching the show if you don’t know that we spoil everything. It’s literally a recap and review. So, after the whole incident with Emil Blonsky, she calls Bruce, and we get to see a little bit of him again, which is really nice. She says she feels very free now that it’s out there in the world, which is great. I think she’s on her way to becoming a really cool superhero.

Wait, It’s Over?

It ended so abruptly. This episode was literally, what, 26 minutes? It was a hot twenty-something. We were sitting there like, wait, it’s over? It was almost a whole 10 minutes shorter than last week.

Right after talking to Bruce and sort of getting his blessing on the whole scenario, she gets on the phone and calls Holliway back. He says that’s great, absolutely, I’m so glad you’re going to take the job. Now turn on the news.

That’s the part we should have known was coming. She gets to see firsthand that apparently the Abomination has escaped. Footage has come out that shows him in an underground fight club, and they’re trying to figure out what’s going on.

Where Wong Comes In

This is the part where I think Wong’s going to come in next week.

For those of you who haven’t seen Shang-Chi, that’s the scene. The underground fight club, and it’s Emil. When they go through the portal and Wong’s telling him he needs to learn how to pull those punches a little better, you can see his cell through that portal, with the red bars and the whole bit. He’s going back to that place.

Mrs. Know-It-All had dazed off for a second while I was explaining it, because she was picturing it. She didn’t realize that’s where he was going back to, and now she’s going to have to go back and look. And we just watched it, too. It’s one of my favorites. It goes by at a quick clip. You can put it on and just enjoy yourself.

The Verdict

She-Hulk: Attorney at Law Episode 2 lands at an 8 out of 10 on the Know-It-All Index, and that’s the number from both of us.

Mrs. Know-It-All went first with an 8 out of 10. She just wishes it was a little longer, that’s all, because it was a fun episode.

This one felt to me like a tether episode, and by that I mean it feels like it belongs in the middle of two things. So I’m looking forward to next week’s. I still enjoyed it, absolutely. I’ll bump. I’ll go with her and do an 8 out of 10 also. I feel like 8 out of 10 is decent for where we are right now.

Even if I don’t like a show, I always try to give it until Episode 3. Episode 3 is where you usually expect certain things to start happening. The overarching plot, if there is one, starts to come out. The characters begin to be very well defined, and you start seeing how this thing is going to suss out in terms of the story they’re telling. So next week’s episode will definitely be the one that sets some priorities for what this show’s going to be.

Tell me what you think of the episode and where you’d score it, and let Mrs. Know-It-All know you’re glad to have her back. She’s always welcome here. I’m working on some things, and hopefully we’ll have some stuff to announce real soon. The conversation lives in the comments on the video above.
