What’s up my know-it-alls!? I can’t believe the new trailer for Deadpool & Wolverine has dropped, and it’s really exciting, because it’s the first trailer where we actually get some story beats. Do me a favor and go watch the whole thing all the way through. Then come back, because we’re going to go through it, talk about some stuff, and hit 20 things you might have missed while you were watching.
I watched it like four times before doing this, and I kept finding things.
A Bar We’ve Been in Before
“I told you you’re not welcome here.”
First out of the gate, that bar is very reminiscent of bars we’ve seen throughout the X-Men saga. In the very first X-Men, at the end of one of his fights, Wolverine meets Rogue in a bar just like this. Later on, in X-Men: First Class, you see Magneto and McAvoy’s Xavier come into a bar similar to this one to bother him. They’re keeping that cadence going with things we recognize.
I won’t count this next one as its own Easter egg, but the camera work matches too. When Deadpool walks up and says “Hi, peanut, I’m going to need you to come with me right now,” we cut to the same angle we’ve seen Wolverine have in First Class. That’s consistency.
Then there’s the claw. “Whiskey dick of the claws. It’s quite common in Wolverines over 40.” That’s a callback to Logan. In Logan, as he got older, it became less easy for his claws to pop out. So they’re keeping the storytelling consistent: at a certain point, Wolverine is going to start having some issues.
The Void, the Fox Logo and the Blue Suit
This entire area, we can easily tell, is the Void, the place at the end of time where we saw Alioth, the big giant cloud, who will by the way make a cameo. That’s why you see the Fox logos and the Fox icons on the actual ground itself. All of this is existentially fourth wall breaking.
And of course, the blue suit. We’ve known he was going to be wearing it. Here you get a nice, full, clean motion picture view of it, which I think is pretty awesome.
Deadpool, This Is Your Life
“I’m about to lose everything that I’ve ever cared about.”
We saw some pieces of this in the last trailer, but each of these characters is somebody from the previous Deadpool movies. So he’s right. These are the characters we’ve known and loved from the Deadpool series.
What Happened to This Wolverine’s World
“Not my problem.” “Is that what you said when your world went to [bleep]?”
In Logan, you find out that something happened. Whether it was Charles or whatever else, there was an accident of some kind, and it was the end of the world as Wolverine knew it. He takes Charles and hides away with him. It seems like in this universe some sort of tragedy happened too. Maybe not necessarily that one, but something similar in type.
That’s consistent with the comics when you look at Old Man Logan. For those of you playing at home, Old Man Logan in the comic books is literally the story of one day when the villains all attack and switch up what they’re doing. One of them is Mysterio, who uses his abilities to deceive Wolverine into thinking he’s fighting other enemies. Then it turns out he laid waste to all the X-Men himself.
I don’t know if they’re going to pick and choose from some bits of that. I do know that some sort of trauma with him at the center of it is consistent with the things we know and understand from trailers past. “This Wolverine let down his entire world.”
Two Heroes Meet, Two Heroes Fight
Classic comic book stuff. You get to see the two heroes fight, and this looks like it’s going to be an epic one. I’m excited to see how that fight turns out.
It’s so funny, because that’s the one thing these comic movies have consistently done. When two heroes meet, they inevitably fight. They did it with Thor, Iron Man and Captain America in the very first Avengers movie, and you keep seeing that same trope. This is another one of those.
The Fourth Wall
“Want to talk about what’s haunting you, or should we wait for a third act flashback?”
Deadpool always breaks the fourth wall. It’s a character trait he’s had in the comics. Some people think it’s because he’s crazy. Others think his insanity actually lets him see past the quote unquote veil of reality. Whatever the situation is, he’s always done that kind of thing throughout the movies as well. Again, they’re keeping that consistency of character, all the stuff we love from Deadpool.
Wolverine’s Catchphrase
“Go f yourself.”
That’s exactly what Wolverine says to the Professor and Magneto in X-Men: First Class. I thought it was very interesting that it seems to be his catchphrase when it comes to stuff like that.
The Car Scene From Logan
“I don’t know anything about saving worlds, but you do.”
That scene where Deadpool’s talking to Wolverine in the car feels like a callback to Logan, when Logan’s talking to X-23 in the car. She’s talking to him and he’s leaning, facing that direction. It looks very much like that scene, so I’m going to go ahead and call it another Easter egg.
Liefeld’s Just Feet
The store behind them is called Liefeld’s Just Feet. Notoriously, in the 90s, Rob Liefeld, the creator of Deadpool, was criticized for not being able to draw feet. It was one of those consistent criticisms that just became a trope. Obviously the man draws feet, and over the years he’s gotten better. Big ups and love to Rob Liefeld, the original creator of Deadpool.
Which Forest Is It
“You were an X-Man. You were the X-Man.”
There have been a lot of comments about this forest. Is it the forest from Avengers: Age of Ultron, or the forest from the very end of Logan, where he takes the little drug that enhances him and he’s fighting off all those guys?
I lean toward the forest from Logan. I could be wrong.
Cassandra Nova
This is our first glimpse of her, and we get a closer look a second later. This is Cassandra Nova, who was the bald person at the end of the last trailer.
Cassandra Nova is Professor Xavier’s twin sister, the one he thought was long gone. She’s mad powerful, way more powerful than Professor X in a lot of ways. She was also the lead antagonist in the E Is for Extinction storyline, where she’s the one who helps fool the surviving Trask into activating the Wild Sentinels and sending them on a mission to Genosha. In just minutes or hours, they kill like 16 million mutants. It’s unbelievable. So she’s a bad person.
And man, she looks amazing. She looks absolutely amazing. I can’t wait to find out more about her character. Clearly Cassandra Nova has a lot of power, and I’m kind of excited to see what they do with her.
Alioth and the Ant-Man Skull
That right there is obviously Alioth, the giant beast that eats matter and kind of turns it into nothing at the end of time.
Then the next clip, as it opens to reveal the doorway, that’s Ant-Man. That’s a giant Ant-Man helmet, and as it opens you see Ant-Man’s skull. I have a feeling that’s actually Ant-Man’s skull from another universe.
Dogpool and the Mad Max Sequence
“Big slow motion action.”
Dogpool. I could be wrong, but he’s wearing red and black, and I’m pretty sure it’s Dogpool.
I went back to catch this part a little better. That Mad Max looking scene is very reminiscent of the kind of stuff you saw in Mad Max: Fury Road. And it literally is what he’s talking about, big slow motion action sequences. I feel like that’s definitely a callback to that type of movie making, and it’s something Deadpool clearly wants. I think this is going to be an epic sequence.
The Portal
That looks an awful lot like a Doctor Strange type portal door, and it’s what they’re about to jump through. I’m excited to see if that’s the case or not.
I know there’s been speculation. Some people have said maybe it’s the Ancient One, Tilda Swinton from Doctor Strange, but the younger version, mainly because of the fiery thing and the portal. I don’t know if that’s true. I don’t think it’s true, but it could be true. These things are ridiculous like that.
Feige’s One Rule, and a Snowman
“Want to do some cocaine?” “Hey, cocaine is the one thing that Feige said is off limits.”
Feige, talking about Kevin Feige, which I think is really cool. And of course we have Blind Al from the previous movies.
“What about Bolivian marching powder?” “They know all the slang terms. They have a list.” “Even snowboarding?” “Even disco dust, white girl interrupted, even Forrest Bump.” “Do you want to build a snowman?” “Yes, but I can’t.”
“Do you want to build a snowman” is obviously a callback to the overlords of Marvel, Disney, and Frozen.
The Endgame of the Fox Universe
This trailer was unbelievable. Hopefully you get the opportunity to watch it again.
There you go, now you know, and if knowing is half the battle you’re halfway to being a know-it-all yourself.
I’m excited for this movie. I’m ready. This film feels like it’s going to be the Endgame of the Fox Deadpool universe. And we’re actually getting some genuine story that goes beyond just Deadpool: this is another Wolverine, from another universe, who did something, who failed his world. What does that mean? Are they going to deal with some of the issues having to do with incursions? Are they going to keep that storyline going? I don’t know.
NEVER FORGET, everyone loves a know-it-all!
Did you see some Easter eggs I didn’t? And which forest do you think it is, Logan or Age of Ultron? The conversation lives in the comments on the video above.
