Dragon Ball Daima spends two thirds of this episode flying Goku through the Demon Realm, and it gets him there by having a magic warp fish poop him out.
The episode’s titled, appropriately, “Daima.” I watched it with my good buddy Senpai Know-It-All, and before anything else I want to shout out everybody who showed up for the last video. I honestly didn’t expect it to do as well as it did.
It’s not a bad episode. But golly, I’m not used to watching Dragon Ball like this. I watched Dragon Ball Super when the whole thing was out, so I got to see the story unfold all in one go. I’m not trying to offend anybody, but I’m most definitely not used to getting it in these small, tiny chunks. Just as you’re getting into the story the credits roll, and you’re sitting there like, what just happened?
And I had no clue that Daima was the word for demon realm, or demon something. Senpai’s the one who pointed it out. I asked him what Daima means and he told me to look at the English subtitles: every time they say it, somewhere in that sentence is “demon realm.” It has to be that word.
Magic Warp Fish Poop
The basic gist is they have to go through the fish warp. The first time around, when Gomah did it back in episode one, I knew he went into the mouth of the one fish. We didn’t really know where they came out.
Senpai called it. He said they’re going to get pooped out. Then we watched them go into the final fish, the fish turns around, the camera’s pointed straight at it, and with no ceremony a little black circle opens up. We both sat there like, huh. Okay. That happened.
There’s a PIN number to warp through, too, and it plays like trying to remember your own PIN. It’s when you send somebody to the gas station with your card and they call you, and you’re like, what is my PIN number? I don’t remember. And you feel like if you don’t have it, everybody’s going to think you stole the card.
Three Demon Realms, and Where Glorio Comes From
Apparently there are three different demon realms: Demon Realm one, two and three. That has to be all new lore, because we’ve seen the Demon Realm before. So which one did we see? Probably two. It makes sense that it’d be two. But three we haven’t seen at all.
So my question is about Glorio. Is he one of the same kind of blue demon worker people, the ones who work for the giant in the afterlife, the guy who assigns all the spirits? He’s blue with pointed ears.
Here’s what hit us after watching this episode. Look at Glorio, then look at Mira, and Towa as well. They’re the same color as Glorio. Aren’t they considered demons? That’s what I thought, and I’d think they’re a group, a race.
Because in this episode Glorio turns to the Supreme Kai and says, oh, you’re a such and such, and names a type of demon person, and he goes, yeah, I am. It’s the same thing with Dr. Arinsu: oh, you’re from the second level. Okay, so now we know where he came from. That doesn’t mean all the Kais are demons, though. We’ll see.
A Final Fantasy Town and a Western Standoff
They show a lot of neat stuff once they’re in, and it looks a lot like Namek. They travel for a little bit, and because it was night time when they left, they land at a little town that looks like a fantasy village. It looks like something out of old Final Fantasy VII, or, to keep it on brand with Akira Toriyama, Dragon Quest. Either way, I love it.
You’ve got all these guys mean mugging them, because Goku looks like an innocent little kid walking through.
Then they get to the counter of the hotel and the dude gives them an outrageous price. Glorio’s not taking that. He literally pushes back his cape, shows the gun, and you’re like, he just did a western thing. And suddenly it’s 5,000. 5,000, we’re good. I don’t know what demon money is, but whatever.
There’s That Dragon Ball Stuff
Then they go to the bar, and the bar has demon realm burgers. I don’t know why I keep putting “demon” in front of everything. These guys show up, and I can’t tell if they’re monsters or dinosaurs or demons. I guess they’re supposed to be demons. They very much want to attack Goku and them, and Goku proceeds to whoop their butts. Halfway through he even complains that it’s still hard to move.
I do think it’s clever what they did with the Demon Realm. There are these volcanoes that spew gas, and the gas stinks, which of course, it’s sulfur. Goku’s saying he could probably let one go and get away with it. Then after one of those volcanoes goes off, Glorio says it stinks worse than normal, and you see Goku blush. You caught me.
But then you find out the gas makes everything heavier. As soon as they said that, I was like, there’s that Dragon Ball stuff. Goku’s going to be working out in this, getting stronger, getting ready for the ultimate fights. The episode proves it, because he’s fighting in it and doing a good job too. He’s getting used to his body being that small, and to his balance.
By the way, that’s the sum total of the episode.
The Verdict
Dragon Ball Daima Episode 3 lands at a 6 out of 10 on the Know-It-All Index. Senpai said six, and I’ll go with that too.
Nothing big has happened yet. And it’s not a six because it’s bad. I’m just waiting for the big fights, waiting for some transformation to happen. We’ve only seen him in his base form.
They did pass that giant statue of Dabura, which I thought was cool. It hasn’t been kept up, because he’s been gone since they defeated him.
There’s a lot of mystery surrounding Glorio, starting with the symbol on his forehead. Right now he looks mysterious and I don’t trust him. He’s supposed to be taking them to see someone named King Kadan, and I don’t know what that’s about.
And are we going to see more of our lovely Jessie from Pokémon impostor? All I’m going to say is this. The character’s been around for less than a month and there are already like 277 images of her out there. No chill. Y’all have got to calm down with this. I went searching for that image. Don’t go searching Dr. Arinsu, or you’ll find out. The fandom lost its mind.
I’m excited for the next one. It’s going to go somewhere, I know it is. I brought up the whole thing about three episodes and then they stop, so we’ll see what happens. There’s got to be a fourth episode. Please.
Show Senpai some love, too. He’s nearly affiliated on Twitch, at The Hellish Diablo, and he needs all the help he can get. It’s actually really fun and interesting. I watched him play the Scott Pilgrim game back when the show came out, and he did Overwatch 2 yesterday, which I thought was really cool. I didn’t even know they came out with an Overwatch 2. If you watched last week’s episode, you know his game knowledge is pretty insightful. Anime fans, unite.
Give me your theories. What’s the deal with Glorio and that symbol on his forehead, and who is King Kadan? Whether it’s “you guys are full of crap” or “oh my God, I absolutely love Dragon Ball,” the conversation lives in the comments on the video above.
