What’s up my know-it-alls!? The new trailer for The Batman just dropped, they’re calling it The Bat and the Cat, and I’m going to be real upfront with you: I didn’t like the first one. I wasn’t a big fan. This one’s a different story.
I’ve never really done a reaction video. I started watching this trailer on my own, got about ten seconds in, and said no, no, stop. I realized I’d really prefer to watch it with you guys. So that’s what this is: me seeing it for the first time, with the name telling me it’s got something to do with Zoë Kravitz’s Catwoman as well as Bruce Wayne.
Watching It Cold
It opens with somebody telling Bruce he could be doing more for this city. The family has a history of philanthropy, and as far as they can tell he’s not doing anything. Come on, bro. Bruce is doing everything. He’s working at night. He’s unavailable. That’s right.
Then the Riddler is asking for him, and the trailer starts leaning on whether this guy knows who Bruce Wayne is. There’s a moment between the Bat and the Cat that’s a little callback to the Keaton and Pfeiffer era, and I caught it right away.
Alfred gets “We all have our scars, Bruce,” and my reaction was, dude, it’s only year two, and he’s already got all these scars.
And then Selina. “Don’t worry, honey, I got nine of ‘em.” Come on. Vengeance. That’s so dope.
Okay. Fair enough. That was awesome.
Why the First Trailer Lost Me
Mainly, I felt like they were leaning a little too heavy into the whole Christopher Nolan look. And I’ll be very candid about where I sit on the various Batmen. I really liked the Batman v Superman Bruce Wayne, the Ben Affleck version. Not that he’s my favorite of all time. I think Michael Keaton’s got the gravitas and the persona, and it’s one of the reasons I’m really looking forward to seeing him again.
After the last trailer came out, I was worried we were in this era of escalation, almost like firearms and weapons. I feel like this wasn’t that, and that’s awesome. This trailer really does look like they’re coming right out of the comic books, with the camera angles and the scene setting and how everything looks. This felt more like the comic book.
Selina and the Ski Mask
Seeing Selina with that cut-up mask got me, and I’ll tell you why. For Christmas, my daughters have been bugging me for a ski mask. I don’t know why. One of them wanted a hot pink one, and she wore it all Christmas, dressed up as her own version of a character.
That’s the kind of vibe I was getting from Selina. She’s wearing a leather outfit like you might find in a BDSM club, but then she’s got this ski mask that she’s cut up into a proper mask. So it’s not as elegant as, say, Anne Hathaway in The Dark Knight Rises. But I love the vibe, because it’s almost like they’re showing us a younger Catwoman. It’s almost part her origin story as well, and I think that’s dope.
So yeah, I’m here for it.
Where I’m Leaving It
I know there are some folks who are going to do actual breakdowns. I don’t really want to. I’m loving what I’m seeing so far, and I don’t know how much deeper I’m going to go in terms of trailers.
There you go, now you know, and if knowing is half the battle, you’re halfway to becoming a know-it-all. I’ve got another video coming about The Matrix, where I’m going to talk about the movie we should have gotten and didn’t get, and then I’m going to start looking at some of the other things out there that I enjoy and throwing some things into the universe.
Did this trailer change your mind the way it changed mine, or were you already in after the first one? The conversation lives in the comments on the video above.
