Mrs. Know-It-All doesn’t like reboots, and the second the new trailer for The Crow ended she looked at me and said, let’s go, right now. So that’s what this is. We’d literally just watched it. If you haven’t seen it yet, go watch it and come back. We’ll wait.

For the most part everybody knows where she stands on reboots. Unless you’re going to do something really cool and still stick to the main thing, she’s out. Her reaction to this one, in her words: “Are you kidding me? I need to go see this.” In theaters. She isn’t waiting. She told me she’s stupid excited for it, and I’m right there with her. I’m shocked.

Her history with this one goes back further than mine. When the original came out she saw the movie, and afterward a friend of hers in college had her read the graphic novel. So she has a real love for The Crow, and when she first heard there was going to be a new one her answer was no, we’re not doing that. A lot of people had that reaction. She couldn’t find a reason for it to exist. It’s been about 30 years since the original, and now she’s telling me she’s ready.

This Looks Like a Movie

I actually watched the trailer a little earlier than she did. One of the people who helps me produce the show, when she’s not busy living a normal teenage life, was working at the table behind me. When it finished I turned around, looked at her and said, this looks like a movie.

The original looked like something out of Tim Burton’s Batman. It looked like it was done on a giant sound stage. Nothing looked like a real city. It looked like a built city, and every street looked like one of those prefabbed streets on the Paramount lot. This one feels like a movie. It feels like what I probably always wanted. I take nothing away from the cult classic, by the way. This is a very different style of adaptation, and I love it.

A lot of people think this is rebooting the Crow franchise. It isn’t. It’s readapting the original graphic novel.

The Players

Bill Skarsgård plays Eric Draven, the Crow. FKA twigs plays Shelly Webster. Danny Huston plays the villain. The credits I’m looking at online don’t give his character a name, but he’s the one in the trailer with the glowing orange eyes, sitting in the middle of the big opera house while one person plays the violin all by themselves.

He plays wonderful villains. I liked him in Wonder Woman, I like him in a lot of the things he does, and he’s played Nazis. The minute his face came up, Mrs. Know-It-All said, oh, he plays such a great villain. He really does. I’m not super familiar with the rest of the cast, but I’m excited for what this is clearly trying to do.

The Bag, and the Rain

The original gave you their relationship in the first 15 or 20 minutes, and then it was done and gone for the rest of the movie. We both think we’re going to get more of it this time, more fleshed out, and that’s going to make us care more.

Just from the preview, they die this horrible death together. He comes around the corner and sees them putting the bag over her head, and Mrs. Know-It-All gasped out loud. It was very visceral.

Then there’s a camera angle of the rain. She was pretty much sold already, but that shot took her right back to the original movie. She said, we’re going to be okay.

The Discount Joker Complaint

When the first image came out, a lot of people said, what is this, the discount Jared Leto Joker? I know. But go by the trailer. His Eric Draven is very clearly a guy from the streets, somebody who’s lived on the quote unquote wrong side of the tracks. It looks like he met his love interest in some kind of incarceration, and now they’re out. He looks like any number of people we might all know in our everyday lives, somebody who comes from that world or has been down on their luck. I believe it completely. And seeing how it all transpires, how the makeup works out and everything else, at least from the trailer, I’m down, man.

He already plays a good villain. Go from the polished John Wick villain to this street weathered, world weary person, and bro, what a great contrast. He’s such a good actor. He’s got Boy Kills World coming too. It feels like he’s been working nonstop for the last couple of years and now it’s all coming out one after another.

How We’re Going to Review It

They said this summer, so we’re good with this summer. I can’t imagine they lie to us and put it out December 31st.

If you watched our The Fall of the House of Usher coverage, you know how heavy the two of us lean into darker projects that have something to say. I think this one is going to have something to say, and I’m down. It’s going to be a good time for her and me to review. I’ll be poking around with some of my buddies to see if I can get some kind of screening, so I can bring you information sooner, because this really looks amazing.

Mrs. Know-It-All called it an important one. She’s right.

Until the next trailer or the movie itself, tell us in the comments on the video above whether this trailer moved you off “no, we’re not doing that” the way it moved her. Never forget, everyone loves a know-it-all.
