The last screenplay Chiaki Morosawa finished is coming to North American theaters in February 2027. Bandai Namco Filmworks dated Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Freedom Zero on Thursday at the GUNDAM Showcase 2026 @ NYC panel at New York Comic Con, and named the English leads: Matthew Erickson as Shinn Asuka, Matt Hill as Kira Yamato and Sam Vincent as Athrun Zala.

A prequel that was written first
Freedom Zero is a prequel to Gundam SEED Freedom, the 2024 film that pulled in more than 5 billion yen and 3 million admissions and became the highest-grossing theatrical release in Gundam history. That’s the part that matters for how this movie got made. Most prequels get reverse-engineered after the main event lands, and you can feel the patchwork. This one wasn’t. The screenplay was written during the production of SEED Freedom, by series composition writer Chiaki Morosawa, Shigeru Morita and director Mitsuo Fukuda. The bridge was drafted while they were still building the other side of the river.
Fukuda’s statement is the one to read. Morosawa was his wife, and he calls this the final work she completed. “Until not long ago, I was halfway resigned to the idea that the screenplay might forever remain on the shelf,” he wrote, “but now it has been actually made into a film thanks to the ardent support of all the fans.” He titled the statement “With 20 Years of Yearnings,” and that’s not an exaggeration. SEED Destiny wrapped two decades ago, and fans waited most of that time for Freedom.
What it’s about
It’s Cosmic Era 74. The war is over, the Destiny Plan is dead, and Cagalli has set up a global peace monitoring agency called COMPS, pronounced Compass. Shinn still hasn’t figured out what he’s supposed to do with himself. Then a mobile suit with a lot of history gets transferred to the COMPS base on Onogoro Island, and that night, somebody steals the Strike Freedom.
So this is Shinn’s movie. He’s on the teaser visual alone, with Lunamaria Hawke beside him in the story and Agnes Giebenrath, who debuted in SEED Freedom, along for the ride. There’s a new pilot too, Leonard Valway, the “Raging Lion,” in his first animated appearance. Kira, Athrun and Yzak are all back, the Strike Freedom and Infinite Justice return, and there’s a new mobile suit, the GOUF Ignited Custom.
Akira Ishida, the Japanese voice of Athrun, put the pitch better than any synopsis. “I’m sure some of you were left wondering what on earth happened between DESTINY and FREEDOM. Well, SEED FREEDOM ZERO is here to answer all of that.” If you came out of Freedom with questions about how everybody got from there to here, this is the answer key.

The cast on coming back
Kenichi Suzumura, Shinn’s Japanese voice, asked people to keep an eye on Shinn, and said he put the character’s earnest feelings and inner conflict into the performance. Soichiro Hoshi, the voice of Kira, admitted they recorded it around the time Freedom was in theaters, and that he’s oddly relaxed this time after being nervous on Freedom. And Daisuke Ono, who voices Leonard, has a connection that goes back exactly 20 years. He played Sven, a Natural in the Earth Alliance, in SEED Stargazer. Now he’s playing a Coordinator in ZAFT. “Having experienced both sides, there’s a perspective I can see now that I couldn’t before.”
That’s a nice thing for an actor to get to say in a franchise that’s entirely about which side of a line you were born on.
The fan vote
To mark the release, Bandai Namco opened the Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Series Grand Prix 2026, a fan vote on the best character moments across 55 characters from SEED, SEED Destiny and SEED Freedom. It runs through November 30, you can vote once per character per day, and results come in December. It’s at the official Grand Prix site.

The teaser is at the top of this page, and Popverse has the full recording of the panel on its YouTube channel.
